Summary

Bicolored sponge. Usually purple with yellow (especialy inside). But also orange or grey forms occur. The sponge usually forms several long tubes which are rounded at the top. Surface knobbed in a regular pattern. More rare is the spherical yellow morph.

Characteristics

Size: Tubes up to 20 cm high and 5 cm in diameter.
Color: Usually grey but variable: from lavender to brownish-gray to greenish-gray and occasionally light tan. In Florida also red and yellow.
Shape: Cluster of elongated tubes with spiky walls.
Consistency: Rubbery, compressible.


Habitat environment and ecology

Grows on reefs.
