Summary
Saltwaterfish. Grunts. They hang motionless in large aggregations above
coral reefs during daytime, at night they spread out to adjacent flats
to feed. Dark tail and rear dorsal fin, blue stripes. Difficult to
approach.
To be confused with
- Ceaser grunt Haemulon carbonarium
- Bluestriped Grunt Haemulon sciurus
Characteristics
Size: 15 to 25 cm, max 35 cm.
Colour: Body with yellow stripes on a white to bluish or yellowish silver background. Stripes below the lateral line are set on a diagonal; stripes above the lateral line are horizontal. Fins yellow.
Shape: Fish with a basic, 'fish-like' shape, with a sloping head with a relatively large mouth, a tapering body and a notched tail.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs. Prefer shallow parts of coral reefs, down to
depths of 60 meters. Occur in small to large schools that may number in
the thousands. Difficult to approach.
