Black Durgon

Summary
Saltwater
fish, Black triggerfish or black durgon have oval shaped, highly
compressed bodies, with bright white lines running along
the dorsal and anal fins. From a distance, the colour appears to be completely
black. However, upon closer inspection with good lighting, one can see
that it is actually mottled dark-blue/green colouration, often with orange
toward the front of the head. Black durgons are capable of changing
colour. The first spine is stout and by far the longest. All three are
normally retracted into a groove.
To be confused with
- Indian Triggerfish or Black-finned Triggerfish Melichthys indicus.
Characteristics
Size: average 30cm, but can grow bigger up to 55 cm.
Colour: black, with a fine line bright white running along its dorsal and anal fins. But up-close it is dark-blue/green often with orange, capable of changing colour.
Shape: blimp-shaped
Fins etc.: Long dorsal spine, normally retracted into a groove.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs,
often swim in groups.
Distribution range
Circumtropical, BES-eilanden: St. Eustatius.
